The Origins
The word "veldskoen" translates directly from Afrikaans as "field shoe." The earliest written references date back nearly 400 years to Dutch settlers at the Cape, who documented wearing these practical leather shoes while farming, hunting, and travelling across Southern Africa. However, many historians believe the story begins much earlier.
The design of the vellie is often credited as a direct descendant of the traditional footwear of the indigenous Khoisan people, who crafted raw, untanned hide shoes using unique construction methods. When Dutch settlers arrived at the Cape in the 17th century, they brought traditional European shoemaking skills. By combining the local knowledge of tough indigenous leathers with Western construction styles, the precursor to the modern velskoen was born.
During the 1830s Great Trek, these boots became indispensable. Pioneers needed a shoe that could withstand the unforgiving African bush—something lightweight, exceptionally tough, and easy to repair by a campfire. The vellie was the perfect solution.
