In the mass-market footwear industry, "fibreboard" has become the standard for midsoles and insoles. It’s cheap, it’s fast to produce, and it’s effectively the "MDF" of the shoe world - compressed cellulose fibres held together by synthetic binders. It offers a uniform, flat surface, but it lacks the durability and benefits of natural materials.
At Groundcover, we take a different path. We use a 3.8mm full-grain leather for all our midsoles. Here is why this choice is fundamental to the way we build footwear.
1. The Anatomy of Customisation
Unlike fibreboard, which is rigid, becomes brittle overtime and eventually cracks under pressure, full-grain leather is a living, breathing material. Because it retains the natural fibre structure of the hide, it reacts to your body heat and the pressure of your stride. Over time, your weight and movement cause the leather to compress in specific areas, creating a custom, "moulded-to-your-foot" bed. It is the original memory foam, but one that holds the memory of your foot for years.
2. Nature’s Own Climate Control
Fibreboard is non-porous and often traps moisture, leading to heat buildup and, inevitably, odour. Leather, by contrast, is a naturally porous material. A full-grain leather midsole acts as a moisture-wicking layer, drawing perspiration away from your foot.This breathability keeps your feet cooler in the summer and contributes to a healthier, more hygienic environment inside your shoe.
3. Structural Integrity
Fibreboard doesn’t age - it deteriorates. When it gets damp, it can lose its structural integrity entirely and become spongy or brittle when dried out. Full-grain leather is robust. It maintains a solid foundation that supports your arch and heel throughout the life of the shoe. When we pair this with high-quality construction, it means the overall lifespan of the shoe is drastically increased thanks to the midsole’s ability to be resoled over and over again.
