In the world of footwear, trends come and go with the seasons. But every so often, a design hits that perfect sweet spot where utility meets soul, and it stops needing to change. For Groundcover, one such design is the Berg Boot.
Affectionately known as our "OG," the Berg Boot has been a cornerstone of our workshop since we first opened our doors in 1990. Whether you’re trekking through the mist of the KZN Midlands or putting in a hard day’s work on the farm, the Berg has been there, unchanged and unmatched, for over three decades.

Born from the Mountains and the Mud
The story of the Berg Boot begins with our founders, Justin and Amanda. As avid explorers of the Drakensberg, they knew exactly what the rugged South African terrain demanded: a boot that could handle steep inclines and rocky paths without sacrificing comfort.
However, their inspiration wasn't just found on mountain peaks. Having just purchased a farm in the Midlands, they realised they needed a boot that could transition seamlessly from a weekend hike to the practical rigours of farm life.
They didn’t want two different pairs of shoes; they wanted one "utility powerhouse."
And so, the Berg Boot was born.

Why the Design Hasn’t Changed in 30 Years
We believe in the old adage: If it isn't broken, don't fix it. The Berg Boot you buy today is built to the exact same specifications as the first pair turned out in 1990.
What makes it so timeless? It’s all in the craftsmanship:
- The Trek Sole: Engineered for exceptional grip and sturdiness on unpredictable surfaces.
- Padded Bellows Tongue: A functional detail designed to keep dirt, pebbles, and debris out of your boots.
- Padded Collar: Essential for ankle stability and support during long hauls.
- Full Leather Lining & Insole: Unlike synthetic alternatives, our leather interior is breathable, flexible, and moulds to the shape of your foot over time.
- Premium Full-Grain Upper: Construction using veg-tanned full-grain leather, the durable upper is built to stand the test of time and keep walking re-sole after re-sole.
"This boot captures the soul of Groundcover’s origins: a well-crafted utility boot, created for longevity and comfort." Daniel McCarthy

Built for the "Broad" Path
One of the reasons the Berg Boot remains a fan favourite is its broad fitting appeal. Designed on a wider last, it allows for natural foot expansion during long walks or heavy work.
- Pro Tip: If you have narrower feet but love the Berg aesthetic, simply add an insertable insole. It provides that extra snugness narrower feet might need, while maintaining the boot's legendary durability.
More Than Just a Boot
While it was designed for hiking and work, the Berg has become so much more to our community. It’s a companion for life’s adventures. We’ve heard from hundreds of customers who swear by its ergonomics - praising its ability to remain breathable in the heat and tough in the cold.
When you lace up a pair of Berg Boots, you aren’t just wearing leather and rubber; you’re wearing 35+ years of Midlands history.
“I am a lifelong wearer of Groundcover footwear. Beside their boots being tough, sturdy and ideal for the Drakensberg mountains where I live, they are the only boots I've ever bought into which you can simply slip your feet, hike off into the sunset and........NOT have blisters!! So comfy, its like you have worn them for weeks already despite them being brand new!! Well done Groundcover and keep up the amazing work you do in perpetuating the craft of fine hand made footwear!!!” Russel S.
“I am happy with this pair of Groundcover boots. They are excellent, light and stable, which make them a great choice.” Gilbert VDH.
