The duffel bag is perhaps the most honest piece of luggage a person can own. It doesn't rely on wheels or telescopic handles; it relies on the strength of its material and the spirit of the person carrying it. But where did this iconic shape come from, and how did Groundcover refine it into a lifelong companion?
A Brief History of the Duffel
The name "Duffel" actually originates from the town of Duffel in Belgium, where a thick, rugged wool cloth originally used to make the Duffel was produced in the 17th century.
During the World Wars, the "duffel bag" became a staple of military life. It was a bag designed for utility - simple to pack, easy to carry, and virtually indestructible.

As traveler's began to value luggage that could withstand the rigours of the outdoors, the transition from heavy canvas to premium leather was a natural evolution. Leather offered what wool and canvas couldn't: a weather-resistant exterior that actually grew more beautiful with age.
Inside the Design: The Groundcover Heritage Duffle
When we set out to create the Heritage Duffel, we looked back at those original designs. We wanted to strip away the "noise" of modern luggage and focus on three core pillars: Capacity, Strength, and Soul.
- The Material: We use premium, full-grain leather that retains the natural markings of the hide. This ensures that no two bags are identical.
- The Construction: The Heritage Duffel features reinforced stress points and heavy-duty brass hardware. Like the original military bags, it is built to be tossed into a trunk without a second thought.
- The Silhouette: We maintained the classic cylindrical shape, which allows for maximum packing flexibility. Whether it’s a spare pair of boots or a heavy knit sweater, the bag expands and moves with your gear.

Why it Matters
In a world of "disposable" travel gear, the Heritage Duffel is a quiet protest. It is a bag designed to be handed down. Every scuff from a mountain trail and every darkened patina from years of handling adds to its story.
When you carry a Groundcover Duffel, you aren't just carrying your belongings—you’re carrying a piece of artisanal history.
