Groundcover at ILM Offenbach: Taking South African Craftsmanship to the World

Groundcover at ILM Offenbach: Taking South African Craftsmanship to the World

At the end of August 2026, our team packed our bags and embarked on an exciting journey to Offenbach, Germany, to participate in the ILM International Leather Goods Fair — widely regarded as one of the world’s premier trade shows for leather goods, luggage, and lifestyle accessories.

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with international heritage brands and global industry leaders, ILM provided a unique stage to showcase our South African-made leather collection to an international audience of buyers, designers, and retail partners.

Beyond presenting our latest range, the fair offered a front-row seat to the evolving European leather market — offering fresh perspectives on global design, consumer values, and the future of craft.

What We Learned: The Shift Toward Lasting Quality

So, what were the main takeaways from our time in Germany?

The overwhelming consensus among industry leaders was clear: consumers are increasingly seeking genuine authenticity, traceable quality, and functional durability over fast-fashion trends.

In an era of disposable goods and rapidly shifting aesthetic cycles, buyers and consumers alike are returning to products made with intention, purpose, and lasting value.

4 Key Trends Shaping European Leather Design

Observing the collections and conversations across the showroom floors, several dominant trends emerged that highlight where global leather craftsmanship is heading:

  1. Functional Minimalism
Design is moving away from excessive ornamentation. Modern consumers favour clean lines, versatile organisation, and intuitive daily utility that effortlessly transitions between work, travel, and everyday life.
  2. Tactile & Organic Finishes
There is a growing appreciation for raw, natural beauty. Rather than heavily corrected or synthetic finishes, the focus is shifting toward full-grain leathers that age gracefully, developing a rich patina that tells a unique story over time.
  3. Earthy & Evergreen Tones
Colour palettes across Europe are grounding themselves in nature. Deep tans, warm chestnuts, rich olives, and classic blacks remain the bedrock of modern wardrobes, offering timeless styling that outlasts seasonal trends.
  4. Sustainability & Traceability
Ethical production is no longer a secondary consideration — it is a requirement. Industry leaders emphasised the increasing demand for transparent craftsmanship, responsibly sourced materials, and built-to-last construction.

The Groundcover Takeaway: Evergreen by Design

Attending ILM Offenbach ultimately reinforced our foundational philosophy: designing practical, relevant, and evergreen leather goods.

In a global market often saturated with fast-moving fads, our commitment to slow craftsmanship, genuine full-grain leather, and timeless utility stands out more than ever. Seeing how naturally Groundcover’s aesthetic resonated with international standards reminded us that true quality transcends borders.

Looking to the Future

As we continue to expand our footprint in the UK and explore new international avenues, experiences like ILM Offenbach inspire us to keep refining our craft while staying true to our roots. We look forward to bringing these global insights into our workshop as we continue creating leather goods built to last a lifetime.

Thank you for being a part of our journey as we take South African leather craftsmanship to the world.
