Here is a look behind the scenes at how these iconic shoes come to life, step by step.
Step 1: Precision Pre-Cutting
The journey begins on our factory floor. Before any stitching takes place, raw, high-grade leather hides are carefully inspected for texture, grain, and strength. Once selected, master cutters use precision patterns to punch out the exact components needed for each upper.
Every hole, edge, and curve must be cut to exact specifications. These pre-cut pieces form the building blocks of the shoe, ready to be assembled into something both durable and beautiful.
Step 2: The Heart of the Process – Community Hand-Lacing
Once the components are prepared, they leave the main factory and head into the hands of skilled local women artisans. For years, Groundcover has partnered with women in our surrounding community who practice the specialised art of hand-lacing - a traditional style of hand-stitching that requires patience, consistency, and exceptional dexterity.
Working from their homes, these women carefully weave thick thread through the pre-punched leather panels, pulling each stitch tight to join the uppers, mid-sole and outer-sole. This decentralised model allows flexible, empowering work opportunities within the community while preserving a craft that machines simply cannot replicate. The design of our hand-laced models feature an ultra-comfortable polyurethane outer-sole, making them a customer favourite from the very first step.
Step 3: Lasting, Soling, and Final Polish
Once fully laced, the uppers return to the factory floor for the technical stages of shoe construction. The hand-laced upper softened using steam, and then pulled tightly over an anatomical shoe last (the mould that defines the overall shape), ensuring a consistent, comfortable fit. The shape is then baked in using a dry heat, followed by a heel press.
Each pair then receives a final hand-applied conditioning coat to nourish the leather, and a polish before being quality inspected and boxed up.
