Product Questions

What materials are used in Groundcover's products?

All our shoe uppers are made of leather. While most of our insoles and lining are also in leather, on some selected styles we use fibreboard insoles (with a foam footbed) and fabric lining. Soles are in either leather or various rubber compounds (Therma-rubber) – no plastic soles are used.

Why do colours and tones vary on products?

At Groundcover we use natural materials to create our leather products. Leather colours, tones and shades may vary with the batches of materials sourced. Colours also show up differently on different computers.

Should you have a particular requirement in this regard, please contact us to confirm current batches of leather colours.

How do I make sure I order the correct size?

Take a look at this guide on how to measure you feet!

How can I make my leather products waterproof?

No stitch-down (hand-stitched) shoes can be made fully waterproof. You can make your shoes more water-resistant however, by applying dubbin or Groundcover leather food regularly — particularly over the stitching and the join between the upper and insole. This will also protect and nourish the leather, thus extending the life of your shoes.

What's the best way to care for my leather products?

Remove mud or dirt using a damp cloth, with a little soap for really stubborn stains.
Allow to dry naturally, then treat (maybe twice a week or depending on how often or how hard you are on your product) as follows:

  • Full-grain leather shoes (outdoor/work)
Rub some dubbin or Groundcover leather food into the leather, allow it to penetrate and buff with a brush.
  • Full-grain leather shoes (dress/casual) and leather bags
Apply a little polish or Groundcover leather food / cream, allow it to dry and buff with a soft cloth.
  • Suede
Use any commercially available suede cleaner / brush and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Nubuck
This material gradually loses its finish, at which point you can treat it as for full-grain leather. To delay this process, use a suede cleaner as above.
